🌟 A Star-Studded Beginning 🌟

Catalina Sportswear started its chic journey when Edgar W. Stewart transformed Pacific Knitting Mills into the glamorous brand we know today. Nestled in Los Angeles, Catalina used its proximity to Hollywood to create a star-studded image. Imagine Bette Davis and Joan Crawford flaunting those iconic swimsuits! 🌟

🎬 Hollywood’s Favorite Designers 🎬

In the 1940s, Catalina collaborated with some of Hollywood’s most renowned designers, including Orry Kelly, Milo Anderson, Edith Head, and Travis Banton. The legendary Mary Ann DeWeese was Catalina’s head designer before she launched her own successful brand, DeWeese Designs. 🌈✨

📈 Growth and Innovation 📈

Fast forward to the 1980s and 1990s, Catalina was making serious strides. With annual volumes around $120 million in 1987, the brand continued to innovate with trendy lines like the Bay Club and the introduction of career-oriented clothing under the Raffles line.

Catalina’s influence wasn’t confined to the U.S. They went international, bringing their stylish swimsuits to the global market. Their commitment to sustainability is reflected in their long-lasting, high-quality fabrics and production processes that have stood the test of time.

Catalina isn’t just about fashion; it’s about making statements. They provided swimsuits for Miss America until 1952 and then launched the Miss Universe pageant. This partnership not only showcased Catalina’s stylish designs but also highlighted their commitment to diversity and inclusion in fashion.

The Attic Connection

I first discovered the Catalina Sportswear line when I stumbled upon a swimsuit that screamed the 80s. The classic teal and purple combo had me hooked instantly. After checking the sizing and condition, I knew I had to snag it for the shop. As a curvy girl myself, I’m always on the hunt for statement pieces that can accommodate a larger chest and wider hips, and this swimsuit was perfect.

The excitement doubled when I saw it was made in the USA. Catalina really prided itself on this aspect. While they participated in some of the questionable labor practices many labels did in the past, they were clearly committed to keeping their manufacturing on home soil, unlike many of their competitors who moved overseas.

Catalina’s designs truly stand the test of time and are genuine staples, especially their swimsuits. I’m eager to find more of their pieces as I continue my journey.
